Final Evaluation

I have produced an A3 typographic poster with elements of my typeface that I created in part one of the brief.
My initial idea behind my poster design was to make it bright; I decided this because my theme is Urban, and if I was asked to describe something Urban I would say bright colours would be used because such things come under the topic of Urban such as; cities, nightlife, dancing, graffiti, music etc.. All of which, in my opinion portray an image of bright, colourful, energetic, busy colours.
I used Illustrator to create my poster design, I did this because I wanted to create a unique image that would bring my poster to life.
I researched Banksy as a part of inspiration for my poster design, I did this because he is a graffiti artist and the spray paint they use inspired me to choose bright colours to use on my poster.
I decided to use neon colours so they would really stand out, I chose to have a black background and have a bold firework like shape in the top corner in neon pink so it stood out really clearly, I then put my letter "e" from my typeface onto the poster in the centre of the firework style shape so it looked like it was bursting out. For the rest of the poster I decided to keep it simple because I didn't want to overcrowd it. So i simply used the same colour scheme to write the name of my font and the call to action.

Final Poster

After I had analysed the final two posters I came to a decision as to which should be my final piece..
I thought the second of the two was the stronger poster as it was eye-catching and bold. Here is my final poster design! ..

Final Two

I then decided to digitise two of my three larger poster designs to see which one would be the final piece. Here are the two digitised posters...

Larger Layouts

I decided to make larger versions of some layouts that I was considering for my final poster. I decided to choose a range of poster designs so I chose two with no grid structure and one with.
Here are my larger layout designs...

Research & Response Continued

After I'd completed several sheets of research and response work I picked out a few of my favourite layouts I'd designed and developed them further, I also added colour to some layouts to see what they would look like. Here are some layout sheets of my further developed designs...

Research & Response

We carried out research by looking on the Internet and in the Library to find pictures of typographic posters. We then took these posters and responded to them numerous times to give us plenty of ideas for our poster design. Here is a selection of my research and response sheets...

Positioning

We created quick sketches in our sketchbooks of grids and positioned where the text would go to see what looked good and what didn't so that we could use this to choose what our posters' grid would look like; that's if we wanted a grid, not all posters have to have a grid structure...

Poster Layouts

We did some work on poster layouts so we had an idea what kind of posters work well and which ones don't. We also looked at the structures of posters and whether they had a grid or not...

Poster Design - Part 2 of the brief

In this part of the brief we were asked to create a poster that will communicate the concept behind our typefaces. We had some restrictions as to what we could and couldn't put on our poster such as:
- the name of our typeface
- our actual typeface we created
- a description of our typeface
- and a call to action
all of these points have to be included somewhere on our posters.
The only restriction we really had was that no imagery was allowed to be put on, it had to all be typographic, however graphic shapes may be used.

Final Typeface

After all the research I did and all the ideas I came up with I reached a decision and put together my final typeface. Here it is...

Experimenting

Then we did some tasks experimenting using different materials instead of just pen and pencil. One what we did that gave me some inspiration was this...
It gave me inspiration because it gives a similar effect as what ink does as it's quite messy. This is when I decided what I wanted my final font to look like.

Research & Response

As part of my research I looked at some existing fonts and picked out ideas from them for inspiration for my own typeface. Here are some examples...

Experimenting

We looked briefly on Punk culture and I did some research and found out they used quite bold wacky colours, for example bands like The Sex Pistols used these colours on their album covers etc.
I was inspired by this and experimented with bright florescent inks in my sketchbook just to see what kind of outcome could become of it...

Then i progressed and moved on to see what kind of typeface I could create from using ink...

The ink running down the page could resemble blood, this would fit in with my theme because it could possibly fit in under crime. It could also fit in with my Urban theme because it looks like a style of graffiti; the running ink could be the spray paint on walls...

Photograms

Throughout the process of producing a typeface we looked at various ways in which it could be approached. One unusual way was to make photograms out of apertures.
A photogram is a way of making an image without a camera but using an enlarger as a light source and photographic paper.
I created my apertures by using card and cutting out positive and negative spaces to create letters. Here are some examples of my apertures and photograms i created...

Independant Research

So i could get a better understanding of what Urban actually was I decided to look around for images that I considered to fit into the theme.
I looked in magazines from the library and various other places to create a few collages, I did this so i could come up with new ideas and be inspired for my typeface.
Here are my collages...

Urban Research

The research I did helped me come up with loads of ideas about what Urban is, I found out that it has many connections for example;
Urban could be, large cities, urban areas, crime, litter, music, graffiti, dirt, etc.
I decided to further my ideas and chose to focus on graffiti. I lo
oked at Banksy - a well known graffiti artist that creates full wall masterpieces from spray paints and stencils. Here is a selection of his work...This image I think is particularly Urban. Not just because it's graffiti but the image itself, we see on the news all the time crimes been committed and this is a perfect example, the clothing he's wearing and the knife in his hand to me says Urban.

Typography Brief...

The brief we were given was split into two parts; part 1, to create a typeface by selecting a theme to revolve it around and part 2, to create a poster to communicate the concept behind our chosen font.
The five themes we were given were; Machine, Urban, Industrial, Organic and Capsule. I chose Urban as my theme and researched on my theme using the Internet, Library and by creating mindmaps...
